For me, reading and learning about artificial intelligence (AI) has been like drinking from a firehose. I could choose to ignore it and get a nice glass of water from the filtered jug in my fridge. But that wouldn’t end well.
Instead, I’ve been learning that boards today aren’t yet seeing AI as an important education topic for their meetings or board retreats. There’s some curiosity around ChatGPT, but otherwise little sense of urgency. In my view, that’s a mistake.
Does it get your attention when companies like Apple and Samsung ban the use of ChatGPT in the workplace? What do they know that we don’t?
As I write this, I’ve just come from a board meeting where I raised a question about the use of AI in the film and music industries. There was familiarity with the term 'AI' based on what’s appeared in the media, but we haven’t yet started to bring the story home.
Yet a couple of local movie projects on the summer schedule are now on hold because of the Hollywood writers’ strike, where one of the big issues is fear of job loss due to AI in the writers’ room. Because of the threat of AI to the livelihood of writers in the film industry, there may be no scripts, actors, architects, designers, film crews, or employment this summer. And that’s just one industry.

Maybe it’s time we all realize – regardless of what industry we’re in – that we need to start a conversation about AI to plan for our collective futures.
The use of AI will no doubt impact your organization differently than mine. Still, let me suggest that savvy directors reading this article can help create the conditions for their boards to begin to understand how to participate in the AI conversation.
Let’s face it. We don’t know what we don’t know. But there’s no need for undue alarm. If we think of the glass as half full, we can appreciate what may be possible with an intentional approach and a curious question or two about how to figure it out.
So, what should be our next right step? It’s best to start by reaching common ground on the basics to ensure everyone is building on the same foundation. Do we all understand the basic tenets of what AI is all about?
Could we set a goal to draft an AI policy over the next year - one that is specific to our own board, our own organization, and our own industry? Could we agree to leverage the strategic opportunities that might emerge as we do this work?
AI education for the board needs a home – preferably within whichever board committee is charged with oversight of strategy and risk.
From there, it would be helpful to identify a champion to drive the bus over the next twelve to eighteen months – a director who is curious about AI, its opportunities, and its risks. Might you be the savvy director who steps up to coordinate the board’s AI education and policy efforts?
It may feel new, but AI has been quietly working in the background of our lives for some time now. The reality is that most of us are late to the party, although no doubt boards that are familiar with the disrupter role will be more comfortable with the topic.
Where AI boardroom discussions are today is where cybersecurity discussions were ten years ago. But AI’s momentum is much faster. We can’t take too long to get our collective minds around the risks involved.
Right now, AI risk discussions tend to reside in the IT department. As with cybersecurity in the past, we haven’t yet appreciated the need for an enterprise-wide approach to artificial intelligence. In my view, that means accepting a lot of risk that we haven’t begun to understand from a board oversight perspective. Are we comfortable with that?
AI isn’t a fad, but there’s a lot of fiction out there. We need to get to the real risks – and the opportunities. We need a way to screen out those who hype AI just for the social media hits.
Here’s what I know to be true – boards are legally responsible for oversight of privacy and culture. In the age of AI, how do we monitor and guide in those areas?
AI’s strategic possibilities will likely be as transformative as the Internet in the late ‘90s – maybe even more so. And yes, the board needs to have a workplan for its role in overseeing AI risk in the organization, but also a plan for the opportunities presented by the new technology.
Right now, the AI madness seems out of control. The firehose of information on AI is open full throttle. Our boards would benefit from a more controlled approach, so we can catch up in ways that are relevant to what we do.
An intentional change management approach in our boardrooms may help us appreciate the opportunities in front of us. If the board understands it, others will too. The leadership leverage is immense.

AI doesn’t need to be confined within the IT department, although in a large organization the Chief Information Officer (CIO) might be the one who takes responsibility for implementation and management.

And that’s what savvy directors do – build their skills, prepare well, ask great questions, collaborate with others, think independently, and use their governance courage to get important topics on the board’s agenda.
